Do you love me more than these fish?
Kind of a weird question, but one that Jesus asked a close friend as they shared breakfast on a beach one early morning. It's also a question I think He would like us to answer too.
But first, you must figure out, what are your fish?
Jobs, possessions, and people can all be our fish.
Whatever it is that we use our time, energy, and resources to collect and keep.
Those are our fish. Do you love any of them more than you love Him?
You might be tempted to scoff or roll your eyes at the question, but really think about it.
Would you give it all up? Would you let it all go for His glory?
We're not meant to live without people and possessions, but we are meant to hold God in a higher regard than anything else. That's what Jesus was getting at when He asked Peter if he loved Him more than the fish they were eating for breakfast.
Peter put a lot of time, pride, and effort into being a fisherman. Jesus wanted Him to be willing to walk away from all that if it meant freeing up His focus to love Jesus and care for others.
He wants that from you too. He wants you to hold loosely to the things of this world and cling to Him tighter than anything else.
So, if you have fish that need thrown overboard, now is the time!
